In September 2015 at an historic UN Summit for Sustainable Development, 193 world leader approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Counting 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, the 2030 Agenda is a Plan of Action for People, Planet, Prosperity, Partnership and Peace.

On January 1st 2016, the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development officially came into force challenging all sectors of society to mobilize efforts to implement it and in special to end all forms of poverty, fight inequality, tackle climate change and strengthen universal peace.

The commitments to “Leave No One Behind” as we work hard toward full recovery of Covid – 19 pandemia is a key feature that we must embark in a great collective journey, ensuring that the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Global Goals are translated into effective actions reaching everyone over the next 7 years.

Leaving No One Behind is the overarching principle and transforming the Agenda’s commitments into effective actions requires a precise understanding of the target governments and people. Women, men, children, youth, older persons, persons with disability, people living with HIV, indigenous people, refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants, all of them have in common the fact that they belong to a Family living at Local Level.

Supporting Subnational and Local Authorities, Parliamentarians, Academia, Private Sector, Civil Society and Families to understand the Agenda 2030 and the SDGs and in partnerships join forces to implement them is an exceptional opportunity to achieve better integration between community needs and public policy development leading to renewed hope, harmony, jobs creation and growth, while ensuring sustainability.

The theme of the World Family Summit 2023 is Theme: Invest in Families: Accelerating the 2020-2030 Decade of Action and the full implementation of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Goals at Subnational and Local Levels.

Plenary Session 2 – InvestInFamilies: Sustainable Cities and Strong Communities - Subnational and Local Governments forging strong partnerships to implement the ECONOMIC DIMENSION of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being. Billions of people will lack access to these basic services in 2030 unless progress quadruples. Demand for water is rising owing to rapid population growth, urbanization and increasing water needs from agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.

Our everyday lives depend on reliable and affordable energy services to function smoothly and to develop equitably. A well established energy system supports all sectors: from businesses, medicine and education to agriculture, infrastructure, communications and high technology. Conversely, lack of access to energy supplies and transformation systems is a constraint to human and economic development.

Economic growth, social development and climate action are heavily dependent on investments in infrastructure, sustainable industrial development and technological progress.

This Session will discuss the economic dimension of the SDG 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 in face of a rapidly changing global economic landscape and increasing inequalities and why sustained growth must include industrialization that makes opportunities accessible to all people and is supported by innovation and resilient infrastructure. Half of humanity—3.5 billion people—live in cities today, and this number will continue to grow. Cities and human settlements are places where families live, share, create, build and dream together. Because the future will be urban for a majority of people, the solutions to some of the greatest issues facing humans - poverty, climate change, healthcare, education - must be found in city life.

Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns is key to sustain the livelihoods of current and future generations.Unsustainable patterns of consumption and production are root causes of the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

Climate change is caused by human activities and destroying life below water and on land is threatening the way we live and the future of our planet.
